There is wide acceptence for physical modalities as they have seemed to be effective in managing chronic pain associated with various conditions experienced by the patients . The selection of the most suitable physical modality depends on the desired outcome for the patient, which is different for different patients.the use of these modalities in patients with chronic pain is advisible but precautions need to be taken and should be carried out under proper guidence of a physiotherapist.

Now-a-days most of the clinics are equipped with these physical modalities to help the patients. There are different physiotherapy methods which are practised for joint pains, back pain and stiffness. Many treatment options are available for the patients who are recommended for physical therapy. Some of them are the following.

Exercises

Exercises are prescribed by the physiotherapist to help improve strength and regain the range of motion of different joints following replacement surgery, arthroscopy or arthritis. Exercise can be done alone or with the help of therapist. Exercises such as hamstring stretch requires the help of the the therapist. These kind of exercises done with the help of another parson is passive exercise. The exercises done alone like Walking on a treadmill, or straight leg raising are active exercises. All these exercises either active or passive are prescribed most commonly before and after surgery.

Superficial Heat

Superficial heat can produce warmth and heat.it can provide both pain relief and healing benefits for patients suffering from lower back pain,stiffness of leg ,knee or neck. It helps in decreasing local muscle spasm and inflammation. It gives comfort and relaxation. Heat therapy in the form of heating pads or warm gel packs are used. In addition to this,heat wraps, and hot baths are also used. Superficial heat, such as the hydrocolater pack, is used to in almost all active exercise programs. This method of therapy can be done with ease and also is inexpensive.

Ice application

Ice application of ice at the site of injury have shown to slow down the inflammation and swelling .It also numbs sore tissues. It also helps in the healing of injured back muscles, ligaments and tendons .Ice Therapy is found to be most effective when the ice is applied as soon the injury occurs and within a time period of 24 to 48 hours. Ice can be applied as ice packs or ice or nitrogen spray.

Traction

Traction is recommmended for those who have pain in lower back and neck This therapy helps I the reduction of pain and increase the spine’s mobility . Lumbar traction and Cervical traction involves a traction machine to help the patients passively.

Joint Mobilization

The therapist apply pressure to patient’s affected joints to help improve mobility and range of motion.

Electrical Stimulation and TENS

Electrical Stimulation and TENS is also used to alleviate pain. TENS (transcutaneous electrical neuromuscular stimulation) utilizes electrical signals to stimulate reaction . Electrical stimulation also contracts the muscles and help them function,the method is known as neuromuscular electrical stimulation or NMES.

Lasers and LED lights

These are used for the treatment of many musculoskeletal problems conditions.

The therapy helps in decreasing pain and speed up healing process ,the inflammatory process, and the immune system. The method only utilizes low level intensity laser. This therapy can be used to treat disk injuries, osteoarthritis, tennis elbow and rotator cuff and rheumatoid arthritis.
